Like with other social media platforms, updates on Instagram often result in glitches that exasperate users. One of these recent hiccups is blank black messages in the DMs.

What are black Instagram messages and how do you fix them? Find out with this guide.

Why Are My Instagram DMs/Messages Black?

Black Instagram DMs happen mainly due to system glitches and bugs. If you have not updated your app in a while, you may also encounter blacked-out messages. While incredibly frustrating, this can easily be remedied by downloading the latest version of the app, then restarting your device.

Like other social media platforms that continuously update their system, Instagram’s recent addition of new features has caused outages in some users.

Bugs and cache problems are also some of the probable reasons for the blacked-out messages on Instagram. Likewise, Instagram servers being down may cause snags in the DMs.

Black DMs happen when Instagram messages appear as black blank strips instead of the usual letters and words. This makes the memos impossible to read.

Some users report that the blacked-out messages only occur when receiving DMs from particular people. Others claim that the messages they are sending appear all black.

If your DMs suddenly look like blank black boxes, do not worry. This does not mean that your phone or internet connection is faulty.

While Instagram has yet to address the problem, it is understood that this is only a temporary malfunction in the system.

Fortunately, you can fix black Instagram DMs through simple troubleshooting.

How To Fix Black Instagram DMs/Messages: (Step-By-Step)

There are several ways you can fix blacked-out messages on Instagram.

Fix 1: Turn Dark Mode On

One tried-and-tested way to resolve black Instagram DMs is by turning on the dark mode on your phone. This will allow you to read your messages without problems.

To turn on your device’s dark mode, do the following steps:

1.     Go to Settings.

2.     Select Display (for Android devices) or Display & Brightness (for iOS devices).

3.     Turn on the Dark theme.

You can easily switch back to the light mode by turning off the dark theme on your device.

Fix 2: Update The Instagram App To The Latest Version

Outdated apps can lead to glitches such as black DMs. With Instagram constantly updating its platform, getting the latest version of the app is the only way for you to fully enjoy its new features.

If your device does not automatically let updates for apps, you can do it manually on your Android or iOS device.

For your iPhone or iPad, just do the following steps:

1.     Open the App Store and enter “Instagram” in the search box.

2.     Select Instagram from the suggested list of results, then tap “Update.”

3.     If the app is already up-to-date, the button will say “Open” instead of “Update.”

4.     Restart your device if needed.

Sometimes, you may also need to update the iOS version of your device to smooth out glitches.

For Android users, you may update the Instagram app with these steps:

1.     Open the Google Play Store and enter “Instagram” in the search box.

2.     Select Instagram from the suggested list of results, then tap “Update.”

3.     If the app is already up-to-date, the button will say “Open” instead of “Update.”

4.     Restart your device if needed.

You may also need to update your device’s Android OS in case it is running on an older version.

Fix 3: Delete And Reinstall Instagram

If the glitches in your Instagram persist after updating and restarting your device, you may need to delete the app, then reinstall after. The steps are quite easy to follow:

For iOS devices:

1.     From the Home screen, tap and hold the Instagram app until it shakes.

2.     Tap on the app and select “Uninstall.”

3.     Then, go to the App Store and download Instagram again.

4.     Log in with your username and password.

For Android devices:

1.     Go to Settings > Apps.

2.     Tap Instagram and select “Uninstall.”

3.     Then, go to Google Play Store and download Instagram again.

4.     Log in with your username and password.

Deleting the Instagram app via your Android device’s home screen is also possible. Just tap and hold the app, then click “Uninstall.”

Fix 4: Instagram Is Down

Instagram servers running down can lead to errors such as black DMs. If you encounter blacked-out messages, you should check if the platform is working or not.

There are different ways to determine if the Instagram servers are down. One way is by utilizing down detector websites or apps.

You can use these tools to check if there is a snag in the Instagram servers, or if it is just your app that is not working.

If the problem is with your app, you can do the following steps to solve it:

1.     Go to “Instagram Help,” then to the “Known Issues” section.

2.     Select the specific problem you are experiencing with your Instagram app.

3.     Follow the instructions to resolve the setback.

You may also ask a friend with an Instagram account if their app is working fine. Here are some of the common indicators that the platform is down:

·       Posts not loading properly

·       Photos and videos not showing up

·       Update icon continuously spinning

Fix 5: Contact Instagram Support

If you believe that the blacked-out DM issue is only happening with you and not with other users, you should contact the Instagram Support team.

You can do this via the Instagram app.

1.     Open the app, then tap on your profile picture. You will be directed to your profile page.

2.     Click on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner of the screen, then choose “Settings.”

3.     Scroll down and hit “Help.”

4.     Select “Report a Problem” and follow the on-screen instructions.

5.     Make sure to state that your problem is about black Instagram DMs. Write in detail.

6.     Then, select “Send Report.”

7.     Wait for the Instagram Support team to resolve the issue.

Sometimes, Instagram can take a while to respond to requests. You should be patient and avoid sending multiple “Report a Problem” demands.
